What kind of «e¸` are you talking about, if the stock is ONE piece of wood?
do you mean handguard?
To me the darker stock looks excellent.
The light one seems to be a early war stock, but maybe heavily sanded

we call this part upper band.
It looks very similar, if not the same to my tanaka 98k, or some other Internet photos of 98k on web.
There exist variations of upper band (probably most of the parts) during production of Kar98k during WWII, this one is called "H style".

my opinion is even if the transition from H to solid was made on 1943
would mean that some are H and some are solid.
